🐾 Is Half Life 2 Worth Playing

You won't miss out on much on Half-Life 2 for not having played the first game albeit a few references made by characters, but it is an amazing game and is well worth playing. If the 1998 graphics deter you, there's a mod in development titled Black Mesa Source aimed at recreating Half-Life with modern graphics and updated gameplay.

If you're looking for nostalgia, play the original. If you're looking for an enjoyable experience, play Black Mesa (I assume that's what you mean by "source remake" since, as others have pointed out, Half Life: Source is pretty much identical). The original Half Life is a poorly made and frustrating game by today's standards.

Half-Life 2 to me just seems extremely hand heldy it always seems to discourage exploration of the maps even the intro has no means for exploring around but I'll leave some examples one being after the jump with the airboat when a dropship drops off some cps in front of a pipe and another is after the Hunter-Chooper fight with the bridge allowing your airboat to get where you need to go and

HL1 is iconic and the storyline holds up way better than HL2. If you can't get over the graphics, Black Mesa goes on sale often and it does HL1 justice. Play Black Mesa then Half-Life 2. You can find Black Mesa on Steam. It’s a modern Half-Life 1 remake. Better yet, play half life 2: update, with mmod.

If I recall correctly, Opposing Force was particularly good for an expansion. I'd play the episodes of Half-Life 2 first because they continue Gordon's adventure while Half-Life 1's expansion packs are just sideline adventures with secondary characters. Both are worth playing at least once.
